Hospital Universitario del Caribe: twenty years demonstrating that public health can also be synonymous with excellence

There are institutions that rise up with bricklayers. Others are built with decisions. But there were times when they managed to become the heritage of a society because they were built on something much more powerful: the trust of the people.

The Hospital Universitario del Caribe belongs to this last category.

Celebrating his twenty years does not just mean remembering an institutional milestone. It means recognizing a history of transformation that changed the direction of public health in Cartagena, Bolívar and a large part of the Colombian Caribbean.

For decades the panorama was uncertain. Recovering a highly complex university hospital seemed like a monumental task.

Financial difficulties, administrative problems and structural limitations were threatened to prevent this situation from consolidating.

However, there was a decision that marked the difference: believing that the public could once again be a source of pride.

Today the Hospital Universitario del Caribe is much more than a renovated building. It is the main reference center for thousands of patients who arrive from Cartagena, the municipalities of Bolívar and neighboring departments looking for an opportunity to continue living.

Every day, behind their doors, silent battles rage that sometimes occupy the title holders.

Doctors who face complex procedures for hours. Nurses who accompany the pain of loved ones.

Assistants, therapists, administrative staff, maintenance workers, surveillance and general services that make it possible for the hospital to never stop working.
They represent the true face of the health system.

Because a hospital is not measured solely by the technology it has, nor by the size of its infrastructure. It is measured by the ability to return hope when uncertainty seems inevitable.

During these twenty years, HUC has demonstrated that public health can reach standards of scientific, administrative and academic excellence when there is leadership, institutional discipline and vision for the future.

Its alliance with the University of Cartagena made the hospital one of the most important medical training centers in the country.

Thousands of general doctors, specialists, nurses and professionals from different disciplines have learned that medicine does not consist solely of curing illnesses, but rather understanding that behind each diagnosis there is a person, a family and a story.

This academic value has allowed the Hospital Universitario del Caribe to cross regional borders.

Today on the ground he serves patients from different departments, participating in research processes, scientific innovation and specialized training that strengthen the Colombian health system and project its name throughout the country.

But there is one aspect that is more important than any indicator. The confidence.

Regaining civic trust is possibly the most complex achievement for any public institution.

This trust cannot be bought nor decreed. It has been built over years with results, transparency, administrative discipline and humanized attention.

Along this path, the commitment of different administrations has been decisive, the support of the Government of Bolívar, the impulse given by former governor Vicente Blel during the pandemic with the opening of new hospital floors that saved countless lives, and the determined support of governor Yamil Arana Padauí to continue strengthening a strategic institution for him department.

The leadership exercised by manager Rodrigo Arzuza Jiménez, who has promoted a vision that combines institutional modernization, academic strengthening, technological innovation and human sense, also deserves recognition.

However, no birthday should only become a celebration.
The truly great institutions are those that approve these agreements to renew commitments.

The Hospital Universitario del Caribe must continue to consolidate itself as a national reference in biomedical research, clinical intelligence, technological innovation, patient safety, environmental sustainability and humanized care.

It must continue strengthening its infrastructure, expanding highly complex services and consolidating itself as one of the most important university hospitals in Colombia and Latin America.

The goal cannot be solely to serve more patients.
It must be better service.
You should investigate further.
It must be training better specialists.
It must be producing scientific knowledge that transforms Colombian medicine.
It must be converted into an international model of public hospital management.

As I expressed the message deposited in the time capsule during this celebration, the aspiration is that within twenty years the Hospital Universitario del Caribe will be recognized among the best university hospitals in Latin America.

This situation doesn’t seem impossible.
Because institutions that managed to survive twenty years facing economic crises, health emergencies, pandemics and enormous administrative challenges demonstrated that they have the most important asset: an organizational culture capable of reinventing itself.

From the perspective of social control, it is also essential to remember that the size of a hospital does not eliminate the need for citizen surveillance.

Transparency in the management of public resources, the guarantee of dignified conditions for human talent, the permanent supply of medicines and inputs and the humanization of services will continue to be irrevocable obligations.

Recognizing the advances of the Hospital Universitario del Caribe does not mean renouncing the duty to monitor, propose and defend the fundamental right to health.

Celebrating also implies demanding.
Recognize also means to accompany.
Support also requires vigilance.

Because the Hospital Universitario del Caribe does not belong to a manager, nor to a government, nor to a shift administration.

It belongs to the mothers who arrive with the hope of saving a child.
It belongs to the older adult who finds relief in the midst of pain.
It belongs to the student who learns that scientific knowledge only has meaning when one puts oneself into the service of life.
And it belongs, above all, to the thousands of people who for twenty years found a second opportunity there.

If Colombia wants to strengthen its health system, it needs more institutions like the Hospital Universitario del Caribe: strong, transparent, scientific, innovative and deeply human public hospitals.

Because when a hospital manages to save lives, train professionals, produce knowledge and restore the trust of society, it stops being simply a hospital.

Become the heritage of a nation.
